Immunisations

Immunisations

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect people against certain diseases.

The risks of these diseases are far greater than the very small risks of immunisation. Immunisation protects children (and adults) against harmful infections before they come into contact with them in the community. Immunisation uses the body's natural defence mechanism, the immune response, to build resistance to specific infections.

Immunisation clinics

Please note: this is not a COVID-19 vaccination or travel vaccination clinic.

The City of Hobart conducts free immunisation clinics for children on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month in the Town Hall, Elizabeth Street Conference Room, 7 Elizabeth Street, Hobart. Access is via the Town Hall Elizabeth Street car park. Free parking is available for clients at the Clinic. Please see entryway to this carpark here.

The City administers all vaccinations listed in the National Immunisation Program Schedule including catch-up immunisations. Details of the schedule can be found on the Australian Government Department of Health website.

Council also offers:

  • The new Shingles vaccine (Shingrix) is free for people aged 65 years and over. You need 2 doses at 2-6 months apart for immunity.
  • Pneumococcal (Prevenar 13) is free for people aged 70 years and over.
  • Influenza vaccination is available free for children from 6 months to under 5 years and for people aged 65 years and over (subject to seasonal availability).

Due to increased demand for our childhood immunisation services, limited bookings for 2024 flu vaccinations are available. Please be aware that pharmacies now offer flu vaccinations also.

Book a vaccination

We have a new online booking system to make organising your vaccinations easier.

You will need to register to the Tasmanian Vaccination Booking System in order to make a booking.

If you have already had a vaccine at a state or council run vaccination clinic you may already have an account. In that case, select the Already Registered? link to access your account.

Instructions for booking an appointment online can be found here: Online booking instructions for Council Vaccination Clinics(PDF, 690KB)

Please note: if the person being vaccinated has received prior vaccinations outside of Australia that have not been recorded in myGov, or you are unsure if they have been recorded, please contact the Health Promotion Coordinator on 03 6238 2711 before making an online booking.

School Based Immunisation Programs

The City of Hobart is undertaking school-based immunisation programs for Year 7 students (human papillomavirus (HPV) and diptheria, tetanus & pertussis (dTpa) and for Year 10 students (meningococcal ACWY).

Missed vaccinations

If your child has missed their dose at school or prefers to receive it at a pharmacy, authorised pharmacist immunisers, working in full-scope programs and approved by the Department of Health, can now administer SBIP vaccines. This is an excellent option for parents who are either hesitant about school immunisation or need to arrange catch-up vaccinations.

To assist, we've provided a list of local pharmacies approved to administer the SBIP vaccines. We recommend contacting the pharmacy beforehand to ensure the pharmacist immuniser is available and the required vaccines are in stock.

Approved Pharmacies

Below is a list of pharmacies offering SBIP vaccinations. Please contact them directly to schedule your appointment.

We recommend using the search bar to quickly find the item you're looking for.

Change to HPV vaccine dose schedule

From 6 February 2023, the dose schedule for the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine will change to a single dose, and eligibility for the catch-up program will be extended up to and including 25 years of age under the National Immunisation Program (NIP). For more information please refer to the Fact Sheet from the Department of Health.

Recording immunisations

Every time a child is immunised the information should be recorded in the Personal Health Record given to parents in the hospital or birth centre after a baby is born. It is important to keep these records as a reminder of when immunisations are due and to check which children in the family are immunised if there is an outbreak of disease. You may also need to show these records when your child starts school. The Personal Health Record and clinic records are completed by the doctor, nurse or health worker giving the immunisation.

Details of immunisations are sent to the Australian Immunisation Register, which is a national database for recording details of vaccinations given in Australia. You can phone the register on 1800 653 809 (free call) for information about your child's vaccination status regardless of where in Australia the vaccination was given.

For more information on our monthly immunisation clinics and school immunisation programs contact us on 03 6238 2711. The Australian Government Department of Health website also has current up to date immunisation information.
